Intensive care needed for Morriston to survive!

Plaid Cymru AM Dr. Dai Lloyd has written to Health Minister Dr. Brian Gibbons demanding a vision of Morriston Hospital as a Regional Centre of Excellence.

In his letter Dr. Lloyd claims that the provision of paediatric intensive care beds is key to Morriston Hospital protecting and developing its position as a key Tertiary centre.

Dr. Lloyd states that the lack of intensive care beds is undermining the Hospital’s ability to care for seriously burnt children.

Dr. Lloyd stated:

“The review of Burns services recently placed the Burns Unit at Morriston as the leading unit in the UK yet the absence of paediatric intensive care beds undermines its ability to care for seriously burnt children and thereby undermining its role as the leading burns unit in the UK.

“The unit in Birmingham desperately wants Morriston’s title and work. I want to see some positive action from the Health Minister to ensure that work is not lost to England. The provision of paediatric intensive care beds would further strengthen Morriston’s position and protect its future as a true Regional Centre of Excellence catering for people across the whole of Mid, South and West Wales.”

Dr. Lloyd added:

“Paediatric intensive care beds are also pivotal to the ‘Strategic Review of Neurosciences Services for Wales. Morriston is at risk of losing complex neurosurgery to Cardiff. The Minister needs to act now in order to protect and develop Swansea’s position.”
