AM calls on Morgan to back real ‘Wales Identity Day’
|
Plaid Cymru AM Dr. Dai Lloyd has called on First Minister Rhodri Morgan to back a proper National Day for Wales on March 1st rather than support the tokenistic ‘Wales Identity Day’ which takes place tomorrow (Tuesday, November 22), organised by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Dr. Lloyd is reacting to an article in Saturday’s Western Mail ‘Magazine’ where the First Minister outlined his support for the ‘Wales Identity Day’ and the importance of celebrating the nation’s past culture and heritage.
Dr. Lloyd stated:
“I find Rhodri Morgan’s position on this issue a little confusing. On the one hand he argues how important it is that Welsh people are aware of their historical background and how important it is that we celebrate our rich cultural and industrial past, and on the other he is refusing to push for our real National Day – St. David’s Day – to be designated as an official bank holiday.
“Rather than roaring on about his Welsh pride in the Western Mail he should be fighting to ensure that people the length and breadth of Wales have an official day to celebrate our country’s past and future.”
