Let Local Government in on pension deal- Plaid calls on New Labour

Dai Lloyd AM Plaid Cymru’s Shadow Minister for Finance and Local Government has called for the New Labour Government to include Local Government employees in their public sector pension deal.

The Plaid Cymru – The Party of Wales AM was horrified to discover that the government’s announcement that existing public sector workers would still be able to retire at sixty does not include local government workers.

Dai Lloyd AM commented:

“I am horrified by this New Labour betrayal of local government workers. These employees are the bedrock of our society and yet they are being treated like second class citizens by New Labour, which is simply not acceptable. Plaid Cymru fully supports the unions’ stance that local government workers should not be given anything less than other public sector employees.

The Shadow Minister for Finance and Local Government further commented:

"Local government employs over 130,000 people in Wales and it is vital that these people get the pension deal they deserve. The public sector have already had to reach a compromise with the government over the pensions of future public sector workers. It is deplorable that local government workers should have to be sacrificial lambs as well.”
