Local income tax fairer way forward - Plaid Cymru
|
Plaid Cymru's Shadow Local Government Minister Dr Dai Lloyd AM argued today that local income tax was the fairer way forward than the current council tax system.
Michael Lyons who is investigating the council tax system in England visits the National Assembly today ( 11 May 2005) to give evidence to the local government committee. Speaking ahead of the committee the Plaid Cymru - The Party of Wales AM said:
"Plaid Cymru - The Party of Wales is committed to local income tax. It is the only system based on the ability to pay. A tax that is based on property like the council tax is a crude proxy."
"The recent re-banding exercise is mere tinkering with a manifestly unfair system. The Liberal Democrats say they oppose re-banding, yet when they were in a coalition government with New Labour in the National Assembly they did little to oppose re-banding."
