Plaid Call For Maccarinelli Homecoming

Ionawr 19eg 2007....January 19th 2007

Plaid Cymru AM Dr. Dai Lloyd has urged Swansea Council Leaders to pursue Enzo Maccarinelli’s promoter in an attempt to lure the Swansea-born boxer to hold a fight at his home town’s Liberty Stadium.

Maccarinelli suggested in a radio interview with local radio station, Swansea Sound, that he would welcome the opportunity to fight at the Liberty venue in the Summer.

Swansea Council holds a third of the votes on the Liberty Stadium board, and Dr. Lloyd believes that those representatives should be pushing for such a night and for further events during the summer months when the stadium is not being used.

Dr. Lloyd stated:

“Enzo Maccarinelli is a proud Swansea Jack and has stated that he would clearly love to fight in front of his home-town fans. Swansea has, in the Liberty Stadium, a venue which is more than capable of holding such an event.

“When the stadium was built we were forever being told that it would be used for events other than rugby and football. As of yet the number of events using the outdoor stadium is limited. While the indoor rooms and conference venues seem to be used there is not much action inside the actual stadium.

“The Council needs to be pushing for more events to the venue and this would seem to be an ideal opportunity. I am hopeful that the Council’s representatives on the Liberty Stadium board will press for this by contacting the promoter to discuss the possibility.

“Such events could bring about a boost to the local economy in terms of visitor numbers many of whom would come back time and time again.

“The summer months provide a chance for far more to happen at the stadium, including pop-concerts and we need to step up in our efforts to ensure that these first class events are brought to Swansea rather than having to travel to Cardiff and further afield.”
